From Ripped Earth to Tumultuous Waters

Updated: Aug 23, 2021

Change. We do it every four years. You would think that we would get used to it. But the stark contrast of the plunge still seems to knock you for a loop.

New Hemisphere. New season. Winter to summer. Although Maine’s July Summer might be the same as Brazil’s winter. New city. New church. New co-workers. New demographics.

The real difference is God. If God wants you to get to Point A to Point B he will no matter what, if he wants to put some obstacles in our way, he can do that, too. Hoping that doesn’t include any Maine moose!

Even comparing the meaning of the names of the city of our change of venue are both strangely different but still the same in theme: Sorocaba (ripped earth) and Ipero (tumultuous waters). Sorocaba is more than ten times bigger in population. Sorocaba has way more than 20 different churches that are Baptist while Ipero has none (this was a gamechanger for me!) One is city, and the other is rural. (Super excited about this part by the way!) Different? Yes, but still the same. The same problem with the same solution. Sinners and souls needing the cross of Jesus Christ.

My Brazil van and my USA van’s only thing that seems to be in commom is the color, and those back home in Brazil might even argue that point as it has gotten pretty scratched up over the years. Brazil/USA. Diesel/Gas. KIA/Honda. Standard/Manual. 12 passenger/8 passenger. Motor under the seat/motor under the hood. Doors no longer lock/Remote lock. No A/C to A/C for front and rear. Different? Yes, but still the same. You still want to jump in, turn the key, and get from point A to point B. And a newer car can give just as much grief at times as an old car. What really matters? The real difference is God. If God wants you to get to Point A to Point B he will no matter what, if he wants to put some obstacles in our way, he can do that, too. Hoping that doesn’t include any Maine moose!

Our ministry in Brazil. Our ministry in USA. For four years in Brazil we do, so we can tell. And for one year in the USA, I tell so that I can do. Preaching in Portuguese/English. Same church each Sunday in Brazil/Different church each Sunday in USA. Many times babes in the faith in Brazil. Many times mature Christians in USA. 5 minutes to get church or two hours to get to church. In both places, everybody knows my name, but in Brazil I know all their names. In the US? Let’s not go there! Different? Yes, but still the same. Many times people ask me which I prefer. I prefer to be where God wants me, because His presence is the difference! So I prefer to live in Brazil for four years, and the US for one year.

New co-workers. American/Brazilian. Older and experienced/Younger and lots of energy. Veteran/Rookie. Good-looking……I will let my past coworker, Shawn, and my new co-worker Thiago argue out the difference on that one! won’t keep trying to compare, but you get the picture. When one starts working with new people on the team there is the obvious differences, but it still the same. Do we have unity, is our purpose the same as we find out God’s purpose! His presence is the difference!

Although ripped earth or tumultuous waters both represent the destructive nature of this world, we serve both the Creator and the Savior,
